मुस्तपर्पटकोदीच्यच्छत्राख्योशीरचन्दनैः।
शृतं शीतं जलं दद्ध्यात्तृड्दाहज्वरशान्तये॥{भा.प्र.म.ख.१८/१५}
Shadanga Paneeya means a herbal drink (paneeya) prepared using 6 drugs (Shadanga). This formulation has been successfully used by Ayurveda Doctors to combat severe thirst, fever and burning sensation. When thirst becomes a complicated symptom in a chronic disease or when thirst itself is a main complaint or has taken the form of a disease, administer of plain water or any other liquid will not help. Shadanga Paneeya is one such combination which helps to relieve thirsts of complicated nature.
Ingredients:
- Musta – Cyperus rotundus
- Parpataka – Fumaria indica
- Udeechya – Andropogan vetiveris
- Chatra – Coriandrum sativum
- Usheera – Vetiveria zizanioides
- Chandana – Santalum album
According to other references Amalaki – Emblica officinalis or Shunti – Zingiber officinale is used alternatively in place of Chatra
Method of preparation:
- Take equal parts of the above said drugs
- Pound them using a pestle and mortar, Prepare their coarse powder
- Store the coarse powder in an air tight container
- When needed take 1 spoon of the mixture (coarse powder) and boil in 400 ml of water. Reduce it to half or ¼ th as per the recommendation of the physician. Filter and separate the coarse part. The resultant liquid extract is called Shadanga Paneeya.
Dose:
24-48ml twice or thrice daily, before food (or as directed by an experienced Ayurveda doctor). As per the Doctor’s recommendation it can be used many times in a day.

- Shadanga Paneeya (prepared with Amalaki or Dhanyaka, without Shunti) is an excellent coolant and gives good relief in:
- Severe thirst
- Thirst associated with fever
- Fever
- Burning sensation
- Combats Pitta and Vata disturbances
- When Shadanga Paneeya is prepared using Shunti instead of Amalaki and Dhanyaka, it combats Kapha and Vayu, acts as an excellent Deepana (appetizer) and Pachana (digestant)
